Into his facial expression an inviting smile could be interpreted. That the oversize pussycats do not look so friendly also in natura, that knows the man who kneels down reverentially to welcome them: Tom Dieck jnr. His three males and two females present themselves volitionally wild, hiss, hit with their mighty paws, let flash on their carnassial teeth. Full of tempo is also the strongest act of this show. It is the extremely tricky and fast diabolo number of Tony Frébourg. Tony works so fastly and exactly that the eye is almost not able to follow his actions. A great performance of this young French. Beneath the turquoise-coloured cupola the Flying Stars swing on their trapezes. The international quartet from the USA, Australia and South Africa arises from the trapeze troupe of the former winter programme \image{1025, middle, 0}\link{406}«Etoiles»{li}. In 2009 it is 150 years ago when the flying trapeze was invented right here at the Cirque d’Hiver. That is why the artists were engaged once again for «Festif». Attractive acts in the sequel of the show are the charming Azzario Sisters with their headbalancing as well as the Russian Aphélion trio and a quite unembellished equilibristic. \image{1234, left, 0}There are even two classic clown trios who perform in the ring: The brillant, Spanish Mitchels (Bouglione’s whiteface clown Alberto Caroli is taken up visibly with his new/old role) and the French Martinis. Maybe a little bit overkilled but the latter bid farewell from circus business here in Paris: Llorenç Massot is going to retire in March. On the contrary almost not worth mentioning are of all numbers unfortunately the final acts. Twirler Natalie Enterline (USA) has w... Thu, 11 Dec 2008 14:51:18 +0100 http://www.paris-tourist.com/en/rezension.php?id=124 Paris-Tourist.com - review archive reviews Meet the circus giants II: Pinder, Arlette Gruss, Phénix http://www.paris-tourist.com/en/rezension.php?id=122 Pinder-Jean Richard, \image{1025, middle, 0}Arlette Gruss and \image{1025, middle, 0}Phénix enjoy a great popularity in Paris. The christmas business with a lot of shows completely sold to enterprices and organizations is profitable. Due to very different concepts, each one of the three has found «its» regular audience. ► Cirque Pinder-Jean Richard: «Le Cirque des Animaux» \image{1130, right, 0}The technical expenses Pinder operates with its 5’000 people tent only for Paris are extravagant. Even 150 spots and 30 scanners light up the ring. Techno music beats out of more than several dozens of loudspeakers fixed on the endless king poles. And eight LCDs show bird’s eye views recorded by cameras beneath the tent cupola. As classic Pinder’s show is staged, as high-modern is the technic standard which plays it to the gallery. An artistic coup Pinder succeeded already last year by engaging Sacha Houcke. He comes from old French circus nobility and worked as animal trainer for many popular circuses in Europe. In 2007 he returned to his home country from the USA. Houcke’s speciality are the so-called «tableaus», common performances of different animal species. At Pinder he built up a big group of Norwegian horses, llamas, guanaccos, yaks, donkeys, zebra and camels. It is characterized by outstanding trick prosperity. But special attention has to be payed for his performances with two elephants of the circus. Working today very independently the both Indians have been pensioned ten years ago because they accepted the ranking order in no case. In the meantime Saba und Dehli came obviously to an agreement – at the travelling zoo they share a common paddock. \image{1188, right, 0}Frédéric Edelstein has rehearsed new tricks with his 16 big cats. Very spectacular e.g. the «living lion carpet» on which Edelstein lays down. In the medias the group is already announced with 20 tigers and lions but they all perform not yet regularly. The big illusions of Sophie Edelstein – Frédéric’s sister – remain unaffected. Very strong in the up-coming running order the wonderful, space filling acts at the flying trapeze (The Flying Mendonzas), at the quadruple high bar (Zhuk troupe) and on the Wheel of Death (The Navas): The artists present salti non-stop and bring the audience to the edge of their seats. Extraordinary disappointing the shrill Rudy Latta Clowns from Portugal. The British Peter Freeman alias Old Regnas convinces with his funny dogs that play a lot of jokes on him. Résumé: Also this year Pinder presents an entertaining programme – however in a quite curious order which unfortunately demonstrates the differences between highlights and filling acts. But in regards to 2006 the show runs all in all on a higher level – above all due to a great Sacha Houcke.\image{63, middle, 0} ► Cirque Arlette Gruss: «Mirages» \galerie{1}In January «Mirages» celebrated its premiere in Bordeaux. The final of each tour is Paris in december. During the stay in the capital there is especially much life around the big top: The rehearsals for the coming programme 2009 run in the morning, the last performances of the current show itself in the afternoon and evening. But nevertheless the spectator notices nothing of the stress behind the scenes. He experiences a highly polished Arlette Gruss circus as always. The artistic part of the programme comes up with a sensation from the Far East. The Zun Yi troupe shows a brillant combination of ikarier and teeterboard. Catapulted into the air the Chineses turn salti and pirouettes and land foot on foot on their colleague laying on his back in a chair. Within the scope of «Mirages» Linda Gruss returns with her sister Marisa Biasini and Sergeï Baryshnikov to her acrobatic origins. The trio twirls itself in a dizzying height. Later Linda presents also the horses, six elegant greys. Beneath the cupola works also Kevin Gruss at the silk bands. But much more spectacular the Brazilian Flying Michaels with their trapeze. South-American temperament joins technical precision – a great show is the result of this union. Two modern solo clowns lead the audience within short intermezzi to Absurdistan. Barto deforms his body and squeezes it through a lot of tight items. Mathieu – already for many years on tour with Gruss – shows classic reprises. \image{1129, right, 0}After the intermission the spectator meets a Houcke at Gruss, too. Sarah, daughter of Pinder’s elephant trainer Sacha Houcke, works with five tigers, among them a white one and two very rare Golden tabbies. It is almost the same number which is presented this winter at the \image{1025, middle, 0}\link{406}Cirque d’Hiver{li}, too. But the training there gets currently adapted and the action is less fluent and less pointed. Both numbers belong to the American Circus in Italy which send also another training to Gruss: Four Indian elephants and Sandro Montez. The German is the new main trainer of Arlette Gruss and brings zebras, camels, llamas, zebroid and further exotic animals into the ring, too. Laura-Maria, eight year old daughter of circus director Gilbert Gruss, is the youngest in league and débuts with six brown ponies. Her happiness is catching, her calmness gets transmitted to the animals. Impressions like these let hope on the future of circus. Résumé: Nowhere else circus is presented with more fantasy than right here. In 2008 Arlette Gruss is a true aesthetic artwork that lacks also not in artistic highlights.\image{62, middle, 0} ► Cirque Phénix: «Extra» \image{1201, left, 0}In the opposite to Pinder and Arlette Gruss Phénix is no traditional circus but a temporare agency production. Since 2000 Alain Pacherie installs his monumental tent at the Pelouse de Reuilly. The beige tarps are carried by an external steel construction and need no poles at all inside. After Paris the show goes on arena tour for two months across France, Belgium and Switzerland. Pacheries productions have nothing in common any more with the classic circus – they are ultramodern variety shows. Phénix has the least numbers in its programme but also the best ones. Extra, the virtual bee, embodys the central theme and leads the audience in large-sized 3D projections from continent to continent. Apart from that animals play no role, the technics all the more. But in spite of the enormous assignment of multimedia the music is live: Seven musicians play in the half-lowered orchestra pit. And already during the first act its percussionists get the hands full. The spirited performance of the Tanzanian Hakuna Matata troupe on the vertical Chinese pole requires true drum tirades. From South Africa come the Joka Boyz; two unique creative and fast cascadeurs. \image{1202, right, 0}«Extra» leaves the black continent and continues its journey to Europe where the audience meet top-performances especially from Russia. To them belong the Boytsovs on the Russian bar as well as Dima Shine who shows an almost apprehensible powerful handstand number – he seems to be able to switch off gravity for the time of his performance. Afterwards the French artist Serge Huerco goes biking in the really most impossible positions. Asia follows Europe – as expected the emotions fall by the wayside. The vase juggling troupe of the circus in Beijing can not be surpassed in performance and determination. No smile flashed across their faces, no joy about a successful trick can be discovered. Surprisingly playful and happy however the hand vaulting of the Dinh Anh duo from Vietnam. Both make the change to the hot-blooded South Americans much easier. The Compaña la Havanna welcomes the audience with a big cheer and starts immediately its rope-skipping act and later the Cubans topped themselves on the teeterboard. They are the only ones of this programme who make little goof-ups. But their high spirits cause an all excited audience by the salto up to five-men-high. Even mistakes show difficulty levels and humanize. \image{1203, left, 0}Résumé: A programme of superlatives! Attractions and staging complement one another; the 3D projections compose the great icing of the cake. But when you are looking for true circus you are better off at Pinder, Gruss and Bouglione!\image{62, middle, 0} ► Attention: As usual in France many representations are completely booked by private functions.
