The Paradis Latin dreams of the «Paradise of Love»
A little bit aloof from the tourist routes the cabaret Paradis Latin is located at the quartier of the same name. Already since 2001 runs the current show. «Paradis d'Amour» ist he first production of the new millennium and reminds nevertheless on the early, popular variety theatres with music, dance und several acts. But the traditional concept suits the cabaret very well – the hall, once designed by Gustave Eiffel – belongs to one of the oldest cabarets on Earth: The Paradis Latin exists almost 120 years.
During the two-hour show impressive song interpretations and funny intermezzi take turns. They are supported visually by projections on a cinema screen. Short costumes with thousands of glittering sequins draw the attention. The Paradis Latin counts itself to the big institutions of its genre. But unfortunately the show altogether does not correspond to the quality that the press kit promises.
A big part for this impression is caused by this evening’s conférencier who can be admired actually only for one qualification: His unbelievable self-confidence and hopeless happiness while presenting poor jokes and going on the spectators’ nerves. He is not able to draw a bow from show part to show part – that is why the contexts get lost very soon. Three waiters, which run permanently through the audience and clap their hands, try to keep the spectators in action. The trapeze artist? Quite so. But he swings directly above the spectators’ heads and his sweat drops precisely into the champagne glasses on the tables. A votre santé!
Even the dancers on stage – in regards to their names all cheaply engaged from East Europe – have problems with their coordination and synchronic movements. They smile so intensively that the ladies and gentlemen look almost dangerous. So it is time to be thankful that only 17 artists are on stage instead of the announced 25. In the meantime the «Brigade de Salle», the service team, steps into the breach for the missing ones. Between steak Châteaubriand und tarte de pomme they shake their legs. Who is still surprised in that by the low performing level under those circumstances?
Résumé: When the artists cheer during the final as the loudest ones it is already a precise statement about the quality of the show. At the Paradis Latin the visitor pays for a revue which is presented e.g. by the big Parisian cabarets. But he sees a show whose level is a galaxy away from the Lido or the Moulin Rouge. The price-performance ratio is blemished.
