Buffalo hunting in the wild, wild east
How small the world is! I takes only 25 car minutes from Paris to America – located right next to Disneyland in the capital’s east is Disney Village, a free accessible entertainment zone through a human-made universe of souvenirs, restaurants and illuminated neon letters. In the center runs since 1992 «Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show» in a specially constructed, big theatre.
William Frederick Cody – so the civil name of Buffalo Bill – was a famous colonel and buffalo hunter in the United States. His show, founded in 1883, had a significant impact on the exorbitantly transfiguered cliché of the legendary Wild West. In 1905 the spectacle performed next to the Eiffel tower at the Champs de Mars and attracted more than three million spectators. Buffalo Bill knew his stuff and knew how to keep his myth alive. That is why the glorifying show at Disney Village, about 90 years after he passed away, would doubtlessly be quite to his taste.
At the theatre the spectators experience a comprehensive all-round package. Animators swear them – depending on the tribune they sit – to their team of the Gold Star, Red River, Blue Moon or Green Mountain ranch. During the show a three course meal is served in proper style – namely in ordinary metal bowls. Both on the dish and in the show the emphasis is put on animals. It raises a lot of dust when horses, cattle and buffalo herds dashes through the fine shavings in front of the reddish rock coulisse. But the Wild West would be incomplete without shooting competitions, rodeo and dilligence robberies. Each ranch has its representative who fights for the farm’s honour. The venturesome rider games and high-speed stage manoeuvres excite not only the audience of the front rows.
Around 1900 it was the big sensation that with Tatanka Yotanka, well-known as Sitting Bull, an authentic Sioux sachem took part in Buffalo Bill’s show. That is why the native Americans can of course not be missing here at the Disney arena, too. With their grandeur they personate an antipole to the heroic but apart from that also riotous cowboys. Unaffected from that the final – accompanied by American apple pie and vanilla ice cream – is agreeable. And when even the best eaters reach its limits, Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull shake peacefully each other’s hand.
Résumé: An impressive production for horse friends, children and Wild West fans including a typical, Disney-like happy-end. Unfortunately the meals distract a little bit from the performance.
