The «Étoiles» for the tenth jubilee
The big promotion posters at the Métro stations announce again: It’s Bouglione time again! Paris’ only remaining fix circus was renovated intensively in the passed year and now it really out-lights the sun. But not only the building shines but also the programm. As in the last years, too, the majority of artists has performed during the summer season in Scandinavian circuses where the touring units close the short season caused by the weather already in September.
«Étoiles» is already the tenth production of the «nouvelle génération Bouglione». After 20 years of lying fallow the Cirque d’Hiver and its old tradition was re-activated by the family in 1999. Since those days the Bougliones present their legendary winter circus shows again from each October to March. And the most important: Year by year more spectators take place around the ring and enjoy daredevil artists and intelligent animals. In the seventh season Sergio moderates the show together with white clown Alberto Caroli. At the Cirque d’Hiver Sergio was ringmaster already during the period of the old principals, from 1965 until 1975. In 2002 he returned finally to Bouglione. His own big performance is the last one of the show. At the final he sings Charles Aznavour’s touching classic «Nous nous reverrons un jour ou l’autre» – we will meet again, sooner or later.
In a high circus palace like this one in Paris aerial shows unfold their whole aesthetics. «Étoiles» has even two attractive trapeze acts: The Russian Natalia Kuznetsova works on her solo trapeze and the Flying Bull Dancers on their flying trapeze. The five US Americans are supposed to be the new stars of their genre and fly the salto martole experienced and safely. Also equilibrist Boris Nikishkin needs no ground to perform. On the pedestal he balances different handstands. Little rolls, big effects – the Russian State Circus send the young Bladers Five to Bouglione to whirl on their inlineskates across a ramp high as a man and show several salti and pirouettes. Confusingly quick changes the magic Monastyrsky duo its dresses afterwards. Wonderful fresh are also the Russian clowns Duet Blues.
For space reasons not many animals get involved in each production. The cirque is located right in den heart of Paris and so on a terrain covered closely with buildings. Today the actual menagerie is a theatre and the restored horse stables is under a preservation. But often trainings with less animals are also an indication for high quality. A nice example for this purpose are the tigers of Hans-Ludwig Suppmeier that joined the Cirque d’Hiver already in the 2006/07 season. They are now in a threesome only but master still a veritable repertoire (by the way – a similar act performs currently at the
Cirque Arlette Gruss in Paris). Later in the programme Vladislav Olandar proves that their more innocuous kinship, white angora cats, are not second to them. «We can not imagine a circus without horses», says Joseph Bouglione. He brings six gorgeous Lippizaner into the ring; his sister Régina rides a short high school on a long rein.
Résumé: The Cirque d’Hiver becomes more and more a high-tech temple of circus highlights. «Étoiles» is the best show since the reopening. More glamour in a ring is almost impossible!
